Beach trees by Quiltworks

I saw these strange looking trees on the Cape Cod beach on New Years Day.  I am not sure if these trees are actually growing in the sand or someone just stuck them in ground.  We had very strong winds on the shore, so it seems that anything just stuck into the ground would not be able to stay up!  They have street signs attached to them (I am guessing some streets are missing the signs!).

The winter picture makes me shiver,with its bleak sky and cold sea.
I feel certain that the trees don't grow naturally in these weather blown scenery.
Funny sight though, the tiny trunks standing upright in horizontal environments.
