Alewife herring fish run

Today's shadow shot for Shadow Sunday  comes from Cape Cod's alewife fish run.  Each year in the spring the alewife make their return to the rivers of Cape Cod.  Herring is a species of fish which live in the sea but return to fresh water to breed and spawn. The herring run is the spectacle of the return of these fish to their breeding grounds in large numbers over a few short weeks each spring.  When we visited the area last weekend, of course, we saw no fish - but the area was beautiful and we plan to return in the spring to see the fish run.

The moving water looks wild, the ice on the shore elegant. I can picture the fish swimming upstream, fighting the rapids in its natural quest. Nice captures of the cold Cape and the freshwater within...

I thought only salmon did this. Of course, I had to google alewife to see the fish. How silvery and pretty, much like your dramatic photos.
