Tomato plants bear fruit in last week of May

A few weeks ago I wrote about my "garden on shelves" to allow me to do a bit of gardening with a herniated disk in my back.

This post is an update on my garden. It is thriving!

In the last week of May I noticed that the tomato flowers turned into tomato fruits!  This is pretty incredible for a cold North East climate.  This year I experimented with starting very early using pop-up umbrella greenhouse. Normally I just plant seedlings during the last week of May, and this year I have the tomatoes already.  The arrow on the left points to the little tomato (this is a grape tomato plant, so it is almost full size).

Later in the post I posted a photo of pop-up umbrella greenhouse which I used to plant my tomato plants in early April.  They survived several frosty nights under the umbrella!  The plants began flowering while still under the umbrella and hand pollinated them by shaking the plants.

My strawberry plants are doing great as well. I had been having a few strawberries a day for a couple of weeks.  They are small but very intense in flavor.

These are my contribution to My World and the little strawberries are for Ruby Tuesday!

It's great that your garden is going well. Just planted my tomato plants on May 23. The strawberries were bearing in the original containers; I transplanted them, and they've come to a halt even though I fertilized them.

The rest of the garden is sprouting for the most part. The rain the past few days is a blessing.

Looks like such a great garden and it does seem to be doing well -- lots of rewards for the effort soon, I hope! Great captures for the day! Have a wonderful week!

Wow - tomato fruits already! Mine aren't even close to flowering. Our strawberries, however, are abundant. We can't pick them fast enough. I had to weed out strawberry plants to make room for tomato plants.

They look like wild strawberries, the sweetest and most flavoursome strawberries in existence.
