Often sellers give into temptation of making their product listings look "pretty" giving up readability which makes buyers make a decision to buy the item. Buyers attention is short, so the listing should not distract the buyer with animation, irrelevant images, annoying alternative pointers, music, and other HTML tricks. Not only those extras are working to distract the buyer, they also slow down the speed of loading of the page. I can't tell you how many times I hit back button, just because the page did not load instantly.
Keep your listings simple, keep your listing quick, and keep your customers focused on buying your goods rather than distracted by the frills.
It does not mean your listing should be boring. Use HTML for special fonts and colored fonts to emphasize important details, use simple lightly colored backgrounds and dark font for most of the listing for best readability. Make the photos of your items as good as possible. If you have to include a background in your image, make sure it does not compete with the item (try to find a solid background with the color, which is has a good contrast to your item).
Finally, use tools to measure the speed of loading of your pages.
I use the following two tools:
- How long does it take to load your page
- How fast is your connection to internet
This is a weekly feature called "Seller Tips". I have been selling my artwork on line since 1999. I have learned a lot about successful selling and like sharing my knowledge. I even won Ebay's Community Hall of Fame Award in 2004 for my efforts. I decided to bring that knowledge and experience to my blog.
